THe explorer is hard to start at times, some have told us it could be the fuel pump, others say I need to change fuel filter and clean lines, this doesnt happen always, if I start it and immediately kill it then start it again it starts with no problem....any advice on what this could be?

Weak fuel pump or your fuel system is leaking the fuel back to the tank.

Next time leave your drivers door open. Turn the key to the run position (not start). Listen for a buzzing coming from under the car, that is your fuel pump.
Do you hear the pump run for a few seconds and stop? weak pump.
Or does the pump run for a long time? leaking back or weak pump.
No buzzing, then trouble shoot if the pump is bad or maybe something electrical.

Good luck

i own a repair shop, and what you need to have done is have this checked before you start buying parts that might not help it ,a while back i did one that was a 96 model, and it was doing the identical thing yours was doing, all i had to change was the plugs ,and the gas filter on it,that was it, all the other shops had said it needed a pump, and several more expensive things done to it,try doing a simple tune up this would be plugs and gas filter, and ,maybe an air filter to start with,im sure it might help it some, and see how much it does help,it may do away with your problem all together, good luck i hope this help,s.

start with fuel filter. change oil, change plugs clean cables on battery and block and starter. cold weather too will slow start process. oil has to be pumped from oilpan to heads where low oil psi sensor is .so it wont start until the sensor reads the correct psi. which can take up to 10 seconds in cold weather. It sucks because I worry too when it takes awhile when my mustang cranks over for it to start. Its just hard to keep from putting my foot on the accelerator like I had to for a carburated car.Just feel lucky you dont have a toyota they have cold start injectors which means it sprays double the fuel in the cylinders to aid cold starts. so everytime you crank it over it sprays all that fuel in the cylinder if it doesnt start on the 1st try its flooded. I work at a ford/toyota dealer . toyotas suck in winter. Its always plugs, Oil change. $ 150 bucks. easy work for service comissions . the lot is crammed with flooded toyotas.
