Yes, they can sell it, but don't fall victim to paying it. After 10 years, the statue of limitations is over. It starts all over again the minute you put a payment on the debt.

Sure they can sell it. Probably for a few cents per hundred dollars balance. You likely no longer have an obligation to pay. Find out what the statute of limitations on written contracts is in your state. If you are in the clear, then you can send them a cease and desist letter to halt all contact regarding the debt.
