I was going to buy bottles, but wasn't sure how many to buy. It's one of the kits like Mr Beer has.

Generally, a beer making kit makes 5 gallons of beer; however, the Mr. Beer does around 2 gallons.
Instead of buying bottles you should keep your old ones (or ask friends too). The only thing is that they need to be pop offs not twist offs. Nevertheless, it you do not have those types sometimes the bottle redemption place will sell you what you need cheaper than a place that sells new bottles.
If you do use "used" bottle you must sanitize them. We usually soak them in bleach and water for a bit then rinse VERY well. After that bottle!
Enjoy!

Usually a homebrewer makes between 5-7 gallons, which is normally 1.5 or 2 cases, depending on how you fill the bottles.

A Mr. Beer kit might actually be less volume, so you should check it out.

Mr. Beer will give you 2 gallons of beer.

2 Gallons = 256 Oz.

256 / 12 = 21.3333, so you'd need 22 12 oz bottles.
256 / 16 = 16 so you'd need 16 16 oz bottles.

about a case if you keep your old bottles and put them in a bleach rince and in to a dishwasher they should be fine i have made many a case of beer we tried several different kits and then went on to do reciepies be careful making your own beer is diffacult and expencive and if you don't do it just right it can blow up and out of the bottle which happened to us on two different occasions we finaly gave up after 12 different tries and we just stick with micro brews now here's some of the best micro companies out there.
bolder brewing company, mojo ipa, hazed and infused, hercules double ipa
dogfishhead brewery, 60 minute ipa, 90 minute ipa, special ipa with currents and green grapes sound nasty i know but delectable
shipyard brewing company shipyard pale ,shipyard ipa
if your going to try making your own beer and it doesn't work out try some of these truly great beers
