I have an 8 year old. She does not have a cell phone or ipod. Shoot, she was thrilled to get an alarm for Christmas. I agree with the safety thing. They do have cell phones that only have like 4 buttons and you program them so they can only call you or the cops. She loves Hannah Montana. Drives me crazy. She is also in love with High School Musical. She likes to play her guitar and loves to put on makeup. Other than that it is riding bikes or just "hanging out". She is also getting into the moody stuff and driving me crazy!! Yikes.... puberty!!

Wow, lets buy a miniature microwave oven that your child can stick next to her ear everyday..... and call it for safety only!!!!

Does her friend not have a phone, you know the kind that plugs into the wall, that she can use to call you before leaving.

Do some research about the long term effects of radiation on the brain (and other vital organs) before giving an 8 yr old a cell phone....

Also before stooping to such things.... how many times does she loose her school book, her jacket, her shoes (never could figure out how my daughter could loose her shoes so often). Now apply that to a highly prized, costly electronic device, and you will determine the cost effectiveness of buying an i-pod, or cellphone, etc.

Finally, look at your own reasons for giving in to your child's demands are requests. At 8 did you have a cell phone? Did you need a cell phone? If you feel your 8 yr old daughter is not safe coming home alone from her friends house.... you may be right.... but a cell phone in the hands of an 8 yr old offers absolutely NO safety. In the case of a child abduction, the abductors will have your child and her cellphone, and with the proceeds of selling that cellphone may well be able to skip the country.

Hi, yes my daughter watches all those shows but as far as toys a cell phone isnt anywhere near what she wants. Can't she just call you from the friends house? My daughter doesnt even think that she is old enough for one. How far away is the friends house? Does she have to walk a long way to get home?

I just think there are alot more toys that she would be interested in other than a cell phone at this age.

I have an 8 year old and No..she does not have an ipod or cell phone. We recently got a "house" cell phone so my 12 year old could borrow it since she is more social and is out and about alot with after school stuff. An 8 year old does not need a cell phone of her own..she can call when she is about to leave her friends house.

As far as toys? Barbies and Bratz are high on the list

My 7, and 10 year old daughters have IPODs. I don't suggest a cell phone, however, like you said for safety reasons, as long as there is a rule stating that she never calls anyone but you. And that you follow up on that, by looking at the bill every month. IF she disobeys she loses the phone.

my daughter got a cell phone when she was 12 and i-pod when she was13. If you want to keep track of her when she leaves her friends house have her call you from the friends house phone and then meet her half way. And only allow her to go places where there is a way for you to contact her there....8 is to young...if you start giving into her now at this age you're in trouble when she turns 14. Because I never gave into my daughter...now at 14 she appreciates everything I do let her have instead of demanding more
