See page 111 in the D50 manual. It tells us that the SB-24 will work with the D50 in non-TTL (Through the Lens) modes, including Auto.

TTL means that the camera actually measures the light from the flash through the lens. Non-TTL means that the sensor on the flash measures the light when it bounces back to the flash. In a real world situation, there is not much difference for most shooting situations.

If you have the SB-24 already, by all means use it. If you find yourself limited in any way (you won't), get the SB-600, which isn't horribly expensive, or the SB-800 which is.

I think you'll find that you need a later model flash to work best wit the D50. I had a Sunpak that I used on my N65 but, it does not work well on my D50. The iTTL metering that the camera uses is more advanced and what I found is that the pics were getting the full blast and were way overexposed.

I just can't swallow spending all that money on an SB-600 (which is probably the one you want to go with).

Read the website and learn how to use the flash full abilities. If you don't like it. I'll buy it from you

The community will teach you how to use the flash properly. Hopefully this can help you
