I would like to be able to turn my stereo on and record a show digitally.I currently use cassette tapes and the sound quality is not always good.

Heinz is right, if a little sketchy on the detail...
You should try audacity software for free, you can download from here:

You might find some useful hints at:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/diy - mostly aimed at recording cassettes, but will work with vinyl or radio shows...

You can't improve sound quality by just recording things digitally. The source sound has to be good to start with.
To record digitally, channel the stereo output into the line in on your computer sound card, and use the built in recorder to create a sound file.
