It depends on what you're interested in doing.
Do you like beaches? Head to the islands in the Caribbean.
I love cruises.. You only unpack once and wake up in a different place every morning..Plus they have great entertainment..
If you like countryside and sightseeing.. head north through Canada.. There's so many beautiful quaint little towns.. Montreal, Ontario..
If you have kids.. I heard the top destination for families (watching the Travel Channel) is now the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas..
it looks like a lot of fun.. (it's on my list now)
Good luck!
I wish I had the money, and not enough ideas.. I've got the opposite problem!

If you are a first time traveler consider an escorted tour, or going to an english speaking county.
That said if you are a bit more adventuresome, my fav cities to base out of are Paris, and Munich. I freestyle and ride trains. I speak minimal german enough french to find a toilet and the train. There is a lot availabe in and by daytrip from both cities. And most people speak english.
Rome, and Athens are also excellent, but transportation is more complicated. Cairo and Beijing are trips of a lifetime.
What are you interests, that would help people give you suggestions. Berlin/Dresden/Munich/rothenburg for the moder n history buff, Athens/Islands/Egypt cruise for ancient history. Paris for architecture art and food, etc - Bruges for a beautiful relaxing city stay with history.

We think every little corner of the world has great possibilities for travel.... There are so many "perfect vacations" they can't be listed. It all depends on what you feel like doing at the point in your life that you'll be taking that vacation.... sitting on a beach, exploring ruins, a safari for wildlife, museums, cites! It's fun to read about a place that gets your imagination fired up, then dream about it and make plans, then finally get there. Perfect vacations and travel are fun and relaxing and exciting and a great education all rolled into one. Here are our thoughts on how to plan one: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/custom-tour.html and http://www.mousetourstravels.com/custom-tour-planning-list.html
Happy travels--even if you don't travel the world... just remember that life is a journey... embrace and enjoy it!!

I went to the Dominican Republic last spring. Was fun. We stayed in Sosua Bay Hotel which is 5 stars or 4.5 stars or something. There are a ton of resorts there. DR is supposed to be one of the less expensive places to travel.
My dream is to go to Hawaii for a nice vacation.
