What about Henna?
For thousands of years, women in Egypt, India, and much of the Middle East have brought “good luck” to their pregnancies by applying beautiful designs of henna on their pregnant bellies in the third trimester. Legends say henna will bring safety in childbirth and a happy baby.
If you are interested in this temporary alternative, be aware that there are different types of henna. Natural, safe henna stains the skin orange, red, brown, cinnamon, brick, chocolate, or coffee and can last one to four weeks. Natural, safe henna does not come in a black color. You want to be absolutely sure the artist is using pure, natural products and NOT black henna. Black henna is not safe for anyone, pregnant or not. Black henna contains para-phenylendiamine (PPD), which causes burns, blisters and various reactions that may last for months and is difficult to diagnose and treat. Use of natural henna can be fun and is not permanent.

"For over 5,000 years, women around the world have decorated and celebrated their pregnant bodies with beautiful henna designs. Although there are no definitive studies on henna during pregnancy, these plant-based temporary tattoos appear to be safe as long as you follow a few caveats. As with any body-enhancing beauty product, it's a good idea to check in with your healthcare provider before using henna.
"When you're pregnant your skin is much more sensitive, so there's a chance you'll have an allergic reaction to the natural dye," says Diane Madfes, a New York dermatologist and clinical instructor at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan. Ask the artist to test a small patch of skin and wait 24 hours to reduce the risk of a skin irritation.
It's also important to note that there are different types of henna. You want to make sure you go to an artist who uses the pure, natural kind, which stains the skin a reddish brown color that lasts one to four weeks. Steer clear of the black variety, which contains para-phenylendiamine, a chemical substance that can cause blisters, burns, and other skin reactions that may last for months.
"If you're going to have henna work done while pregnant, make sure the artist has good references and make sure the quality of the product is pure," says Renda Dabit, henna artist and owner of the Henna Garden — an event-planning company in San Francisco specializing in henna-themed functions. It's best to steer clear of street fair artists and do-it-yourself henna kits because they sometimes use black henna."

Janna, ask your doctor first. And if anyone henna's you, make sure that they don't use any terps in their henna, or that they use lavender terp, which is the safest terp to use. Get a list of ingredients from the henna artist and go over them with your doctor. If they use preprepared paste or cannot tell you the ingredients for whatever reason, DON'T go to them. Also, make sure you have someone who will not use black henna on you. As long as your doctor gives the ok, then it is ok. If you need help finding a henna artist, I have a long list of artists who are professional and safe. Just email me at matineesiren at yahoo and I will help you.

All natural henna designs are completely safe during pregnancy. In other countries across the world it is apart of the culture to henna an expecting mom.
Most places that do henna are pretty educated on it's use but be wary of people who do henna with "black henna" Here's a link with more info http://www.hennapage.com/henna/ppd/index.html
All natural henna will stay on for only about 2 weeks and will be orange-y/reddish and then fade to brown and then slowly fade away.
here is a great site for learning more about henna and they have links for finding a reputable henna artist in your area http://www.hennapage.com/
If you scroll down you will see a link to info on henna and childbirth and postpartum traditions.

Hair stylist will say it is ok. Some doctors may have issues with it due to the chemicals you can breath in is not good for you or the baby. I have died my hair and gotten a perm before while pregnant and everything was ok. I would say you are safe. If you are going to lighten and use bleach then I would stay away from that because of the chemicals. But hair dying shoud be fine.

Yes, it's perfectly safe. It's just a crushed up herb. If you are concerned, however, look for a kind that isn't stuffed with chemicals. The natural kind works better anyway
