I have not been wearing earrings for a couple of months now, but have noticed since yesterday that one side has a lump by the earring hole and there is puss coming out. Why would this happen now even though i've not been wearing earring for a long time??

A little infection may have been lurking in there, and recently developed because your immune system was weakened by something such as a cold. Try Savlon or some other antiseptic cream, and if it doesn't clear up in a day or two, go and see your doctor. P.S. Don't even read the pea brained answers some infants have posted to this question!

If the lump is tender (and maybe with a bit of redness) it is most likely an infection and will need an antibiotic or wash with a mild antiseptic .It could also so be a sebaceous cyst (other name is a wen) not serious .

this happens to me if i don't wear real gold or silver earings. It causes an infection.Keep cleaning them with clean soapy water maybe a little salt as well and turn the ear rings at the same time. Good luck

It's probably an infection in the fat cells called cellulosis, and it's VERY DANGEROUS ! It can cause blood poisoning. I had it once and the doctor circled the bumps in pen and said if it spread at all I'd have to go into the hospital ! But, the anti biotics shrunk it over night. GO TO THE DOCTOR !

because you have an opening within tissue,it is very easy to get "dirt"inside which can easily led to an infection.Just clean with antiseptic.
