Yes, a dog can be constipated. You can give him a small scoop of canned pumpkin. The fiber helps.

Puppies can certainly suffer from constipation. However, what is your definition of "good puppy food." It should be a brand such as Canidae, Innova or Solid Gold. Odds are it isn't. If it is Nutro, Purina, Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc. Odds are it is definitely the food causing it. These foods have grains, rice and fillers and these are all things that puppies can't digest, and therefore cause constipation and other problems. IF it is not the food, it could be worms, or just an obstruction. Take him to the vet and be sure. Better safe than sorry. There is no "natural" or "normal" reason for a puppy to be constipated. You need to check it out.

Yeah, my mom's dog is prone to it. Pumpkin filling works well, as does olive oil. Fruit is also good (especially pears), but don't feed grapes or any dried fruit. Despite what the first person said, don't feed him broccoli or cauliflower... It's very gasy, and dogs can't handle it... large amounts can actually cause a dog's stomach to invert (it basically ties itself in a knot and requires an emergency operation - otherwise, it can kill them... kinda like getting the Bends).
Food is also often a contributing factor... go for a natural pet food... Canidae is good (100% organic and human quality ingredients) and cheaper than most others with comparable quality (a couple bucks more than Iams, Purina, etc... and actually cheaper than Science Diet and whatnot).
If this is his first experience with it, then take him to the vet to make sure there's nothing wrong and there's no obstruction. If it's just an ongoing thing that happens every now and then, well... new food, pumpkin filling, olive oil, and pears.

Yes! And cats too! An easy home remedy is to sprinkle a few bran flakes (or all bran, etc) on their food each time you feed them. My dog is always more healthy when I supplement her dry food. Sometimes I give her the leftover oatmeal tossed with a little EVOO (extra virgin olive oil). She also loves to eat leftover sauteed veggies-squash and broccoli are her favorites. Also, between bags of food, I try to make her a big batch of browned hamburger and rice which feeds her for 4 or so meals. It is a good way to clean her out between bags of dry food. It makes bathroom times much easier.
My personal opinion is that constipation is the leading cause of colon cancer in dogs. Most dog foods aren't very fibrous. As time passes, buildup forms on the walls of the intestines and absorbtion of nutrients is lost. Just like in humans. The best way to detox your dog, and keep it free of allergies, etc, is to cleanse it's colon periodically, just like in humans. Sorry if this sounds gross :) But it's true!

make sure he has plenty of water, if he is real young you can take a baby wipe add warm water to it and gently rub his butt and this should stimulate him to go, that is how the mother dog does it by licking, I wouldn't suggest that, LOL! just kidding, I have raised may litters of pups and some do get constipated, make sure you haven't given him rawhide bones or those greenies because these could cause a blockage and actually kill the pup. try the wiping, but be gentle because they can become very sore. if this does not produce a bowel movement then a trip to your local vet may be necessary.

Yes, they can, a cheap and easy fix is 1 tablespoon of mineral oil, just let your dog lick it off the spoon. If you let your dog in at night you don't want to try something that will give him the extreme poopers like changing his diet until you have the time to keep and eye on him or you could be cleaning up the extreme poopers poop.

It's totally natural for a puppy to have problems going to the bathroom. As long as she goes I would not worry about it.

Yes they do. I use to work for a veterinarian and we would suggest to purchase "pumpkin filling" in a can from your local grocery store. Only give about 2 tablespoons.
