i'm thinking of buying a house that has ugly painted cedar exterior and replacing it with a nice italian/spanish stucco. does anyone know how much it will cost and if it's a wise and durable option? how long it will take to do? (i really don't like vinyl siding).

Stucco works best when applied to a concrete base. Block buildings or formed concrete buildings are the best application for it. The next best is a steel framed building with concrete backer boards or exterior drywall-type sheeting for stability. Stucco is non-flexible so the base must be firm and non-shifting. Wood changes shape and size with temp and humidity, causes cracks and voids and leaks through the stucco to the wood or the inside cavity beyond. It might be cheaper for you to have it brick faced if you don't like siding. Stucco won't keep it's look for long on a wooden structure.

Most reputable contractors will give you a free estimate. Get a few (at least three) from licensed companies and make sure you check them out with BBB. Most of the cost of stucco is labor so it varies with the area you are in, and the exact nature of the work.

And yes, it looks great when it is new, but then it cracks and all that curb appeal you paid for is gone....

Stucco will crack over time and require repairs. Cost depends on the size of the house, the difficulty of the stucco job(how many windows, doors, dormers, height of the house, etc), and where you live.
