I'd also prefer to avoid puppy mills. We don't have a dog, but we live in a very animal-friendly home. We have 3 cats that are very friendly and good around dogs, and a parrot that doesn't do anything and I'm not a fan of.

Bulldogs in general, especially English and French bulldogs are the most expensive breeds out there. You should expect to pay over $1,000 if you go to a responsible breeder. RESEARCH THIS BREED FIRST!! They have so many problems. I have one, and love him to pieces - but you seriously need to have a savings set up for the dog. We researched for 6 months and finally found a breeder who offered a health guarentee, we paid over $1,600 for him. People are going to tell you that you can get them cheaper. And you can, if you look in the newspaper, you will pay about $600 for the dog, but if you do this, you may as well sign away your life savings for back and knee surgery and breathing problems. These are genetic issues in the English bulldog breed and if you find someone who offers a dog that cheap, I can assure you that they are not good breeders. Many of these dogs require C-section births due to their build, and thats going to cost the breeder, in turn raising prices on your puppy. They require so much prenatal care, etc. So if a breeder CAN afford to sell you a pup for under $1,000 odds are they have not taken these very important steps in breeding, and your puppy has not been genetically tested, etc. Anyway, the english bulldog is a lovely pet, and I don't want to discourage you from getting one, but PLEASE do research on this breed and make sure it fits your lifestyle and financial resources!

Where do you live? Without that information, its not possible to give your specific advice. I would contact the AKA or the equivelent and the get the names of reputable breeders.

My wife and I live in London with a few cats. About a year and a half ago we got an English Bulldog b itch from Bulldog Rescue. It was a fair amount of work to get her adjusted, but now she spends her days happily sleeping on a couch which she has claimed as her own. Dog rescue organisations can be good if you don't want to spend much money, although the dogs are older and have frequently been abused or otherwise mistreated.

They are wonderful dogs, very sweet, cute and funny. They are also stubborn and not particularly obedient. Some people mistake this as stupidity.

If you buy from a good breeder, expect to pay between £1,000 - £1,300 in the UK. I am not sure about the US but it's probably in the same range.

This breed doesn't come cheaply, but that's due to the fact of how expensive they are to breed. The female delivers via C-section and they require artificial insemination to impregnate.

Around here, they start at $1000 and can go up to $2500 and sometimes more. You definitely want to make sure you are working with a good reputable breeder who does all the needed genetic health testing for this breed. My friend "rescued" a bulldog last year, and he obviously came from a bad breeder. He has the genetic mange, which is not contagious to other animals, but a lifetime commitment to controling outbreaks. He obviously came for a "back yard breeder" who didn't care that they were breeding dogs with this genetic defect.

Go to akc.org and go to the breeder referral section. It should list the parent club for your breed and there you will be able to get some good suggestions for reputable breeders. Do your own research to ensure you are dealing with a good breeder and know what to ask about the dogs/puppies when the time comes.

I would look for bulldog rescue groups. They are knowledgable and have many dogs fostered, or on www.petfinder.com. Many of them are adults but you'll come across puppies from time to time since some pregnant dogs wind up homeless. I do not advocate buying from breeders due to all the homeless animals waiting in shelters waiting to be adopted and million getting euthanized yearly. If you do opt to buy from a reputable breeder, expect to pay at least $800-$1000.

From experience working in a shelter, I can tell you this: bulldogs are so cute and have such funny personalities. However, they are prone to many many illnesses, more than any other breed I've seen. They tend to have problems with obesity, spine, tail, eyes, and respiratory. They have short lives compared to other breeds. They are not terribly active after about 2 years old, when they outgrow all the puppy-ness. I've personally never encountered a totally healthy one. If I were you, I'd educate myself about the breed and decide if it's something you really wanna do because it's not like getting just any dog.

You need to find a good breeder in your area, and I'd check with the AKC website as they will provide links. Go to the breeders house before you buy any puupy to check the living conditions and parents. Most breeders will have a waiting list so you need to pre-order. The cost for a bulldog will range from $2000-$4500. Make sure both parents have been screened for all health problems and have at least one some champion titles. Bulldog are a great breed but unexperienced breeders produce some pretty unhealthy offspring.

We paid $2000 for Bacchus.

The BEST source of information on bulldogs is the people who have devoted their lives to them.....the Bulldog Club of America.

http://www.thebca.org/

Lots of excellent info on their site, including breeder referral, questions to ask a breeder, and other educational material.

Look into English Bull dog rescue societies. These are abandoned dogs or dogs that had puppies that the owner didn't want and left them somewhere.

Google your area to see if there are any located near you.

Good Luck
