I'm from the north, although I don't live there anymore. I find that the best way to beat dry skin is to avoid salt, caffeine (easier said than done : ), and keep a diet rich in olive oil or other healthy fats such as salmon, nuts or avocado. Drink lots of water, avoid processed food. I never would have believed this until I tried it myself. It's like eating your moisturizer!

This may be classified as "boring" however, I say up your water intake by about 25%...and as far as lotions go, I love Corn Huskers lotion for extremely dry skin. I can't tell you much about extreme cold since I'm a Miami chick...but the one time I was in Alaska...I FELT that dryness you speak of. I have dry skin as it is, so I have to keep on top of it and those are pretty much my only 2 suggestions....good luck with that, and stay warm. lol

Oh, there's this great in-shower skin conditioner by Oil of Olay that my father turned me on to! It comes in a yellow bottle, and after showering, you just slather it on and rinse. You PAT yourself dry w/ a towel. My skin already feels muuuch better after that, but I take it one step further with Lubriderm's shea/cocoa butter lotion. I hate the smell of cocoa butter, and I'm happy to say it almost smells unscented. I used to be afraid that the friction of my clothes on my dry skin would ignite, but now my skin is smiling. Have fun!

Buy a humidifier for your home and make sure it runs overnight and during the day while you're at work. This will replenish the moisture in the air and help everything from your nose to your hands feel better.

If your hands are really dry I but lotion on my hands before I go to bed and then put a pair of socks over them. My grandma told me this technique and it really helps!

its not all that cool or unique, but drink alot of water, the lower humidity in win ter tends to dry people out more, and thats why you feel "dry"... try something llike 2 L per day or so. or fly to hawaii, its more torpical and humid and while its a little more expensive way to hydrate yourself, it may be worth it

Use oil instead of lotion. You may like to try emu oil as it contains ingredients that are good for healthy skin.
