I'm in the market for a used car, probably 1998 Honda Civic. Considering its age, what kind of mileage should I be expecting? Should I not worry about it, and just (attempt to) assess the condition of the car? Maybe I should try and find someone to go with me who knows something about cars...

I'm so not a car person.. I mean the amount of miles the car's driven. Does it make a difference?

12k miles a year is avg... so 120k-150k should be reasonable.

The most important maintenance on a Honda is the timing belt and the water pump.... it should have been replaced at around 90k miles. If not, then deduct $500 from the price because you'd have to do it yourself.

Regardless, have it thorougly checked out by a mechanic. There are mobil mechanics that will come to you. Check the Yellow Pages.

Well, you know that the cars get great fuel economy. And alot of people have them so parts are available. Get somebody mechanical with you and do the other looking, is it clean and well maintained or has it just been driven into the ground? That is how you can evaluate how much you are willing to pay for it. For some people mechanicals are not an issue in the car(they got another engine at home)and just need a good body. With others, the body can be damaged - they know how to fix that. And others the interior could be gone. And others want perfection all around. The seller is going to make all points as best as possible(or if there is not even that attempt) they don't care and are a car wrecker. You can tell alot about how the person presents themselves as to how they keep up their vehicle.

Highly recommend taking someone who knows cars.. Or ask the seller if you can have the car checked out at a garage like pepboys or something.

Also get the vin number and run a carfax check on the car to ensure there is not something major in it's past.

Both of those are worth their money for any car over a few thousand dollars.

Mileage on a Honda Civic should be around high 20 mpg to low 30 mpg

Good luck

There si no specific mileage where a car will hit it and just fall apart. although it would be fun to watch. Honda are good cars. they can run for even. best bet is to look for the best car in the best shape. yes bring someone if you don't know much and have them ask questions. ask questions when you buy. before you buy take it to a mechanic and have it looked at it will be worth it. if they don't allow it then walk away because something is wrong with the car that they are hiding. try to make a budget. then find a car that meets your expectations and is in your budget and you will be happy. don't spend more than you want to. hope this helps
