I don't think that he is using her as he is dropping her off at the subway station. I do think that he is being cheap with his money and time. It doesn't sound like if she is in a bind and needed him, he wouldn't help her out (and if he did, he would complain about it).

Sounds like a very frugal young man, in fact sounds so tight with his money he has lost sense of reason. To let a young woman who he apparently cares for take the subway and probably walk home too, is not in my opinion a very caring person. Late at night and with the dangers there are out there is beyond reason. If he is allowed to continue this way, now he is on borderline selfishness, I can guarantee your friend if they marry he will continue his ways and get even worst and then who will stop him from being a full-blown selfish person. His frugality and tightness with money is like an illness. Many people who become so frugal eventually care for no one, not wife or children or friend or anyone else, sometimes not even themselves. Already you have proof how things will be with them. A man that invites his girlfriend out for the evening and won't drive her home is not a caring person, at least not for her well-being and then not to offer a bus ticket is total callous. Tell your friend that love does not act this way, and if she wants a loving husband, to get out from this relationship and to get out quickly.
Love is caring, and sharing and loving and totally unselfish. Love does not ask but gives to the one that is loved. Please tell your friend this. You sound like a caring person, at least she has you that cares..Good Luck.

He has no respect for her if he won't see her home safely. He shouldn't have to pay her bills, but if he asks her out on a date, then he's reponsible for the expenses on the date.

Seems like he might be a little "sneaky", maybe she's not the only girl in his life and he doesn't want to be seen dropping her off.

He is not a gentleman/mature enough and he doesn't care of her...his love for her is just half-cooked and he doesn't know how to handle a good relationship.
