Is it the religion, or just some Islamic societies? People have a natural tendency to sing, dance and make music. Why restrict them?

Saying Islam frowns upon music is similar to saying that Christianity frowns upon dancing.

There are sub groups in both religions that feel that music/dancing promotes bad behaviour and in both religions, those groups are very small minorities.

There is a very rich and vibrant Islamic music industry just like the Gospel music scene.

Making music for festivities where people celebrate natural events: marriage, coming of someone you love etc, holidays is allowed in Islam.

But there isnt a clear cut ruling on this.

When Islam does not have a clear cut ruling on something, scholars usually refer to general rulings to provide a specific ruling:

1. everything should be done in moderation-extremity is disliked by God

2. anything that intices sexual urges between two people who are not legally married is frowned upon.

3. anything that is not useful or productive is a waste of time. This isnt sin, but is disliked by God.

Anyone who has relevant knowledge of the teachings of Islam can make logical deductions based on these.

Nah that's just the extreme Islam fundementalist. Music tend to sway people to not pray and makes people forget about religious duties such and such. To the fundementalists it's just a precaution to avoid this. While Islam is alright with music, as long as it doesn't mock/insult religion, God or whatever that you can be smart enough to think for yourself that's againts the faith and such. Some music can be benificial, and it is okay if you remember to worship God and religious duties :)

Peace out.

It is just one particularly fundamentalist interpretation of Islam. Even Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) is now producing music again.
