Riiiight... except the Iraqi government, the Kurds, the Iraqi people that would be killed in the chaos that would form if we all just up and left.
Good point.
We are there at the request of the Iraqi government. They are a friend and ally. You wanna abandon an ally?
EDIT: The Iraqi government pledged a million dollars for Katrina relief, actually. And that's not counting private Iraqi donors. Thanks.

I sure don't know. I thought we won the war when we deposed Saddam and destroyed his weapons. The conservatives used the phrase "hold the course" until President Bush admitted he made a lot of errors in the Iraqi war. They described the position of the Democrats as "cut and run" until a lot of Republicans started taking the same position. Neither phrase is a plan of action ---they're bumper sticker slogans. No one has told me what "victory" is in Iraq. Is it stopping the Sunnis and Shiites from fighting among themselves? If so, forget that. The issue between the Shiites and the Sunnis is over who is the heir to Mohammad. They been arguing and fighting about that for more than 800 years, so we're not going to solve that problem.

I believe your question is faulty. A sizable (although not a majority) of the American people and the Iraqi government want a continued American presence in Iraq to help stabilize the country. To answer the question, "Why are we still at War when it is heavily unpopular in the States." - If we left Iraq, it would likely fall into chaos and some sort of authoritarian government would eventually emerge. That said, we as a people (an especially the troops as our sacrifices, minus the families of the troops, are quite limited) are essentially held hostage by the our misguided decision to invade the country.

Becuase we are not there at the invite of the Iraqi people! We dont care if they want us there or not. I love the wing nuts, "you have to look at the good thats going on"...lol!! Good only becuase its "them" and not "us"! We would never consider it a good thing to get invaded and conquered by the worlds lone superpower, and then succumb to believing that it is "good" for us. It is only good for the military industrial complex that is profiting to the tune of tens of billions of our dollars. We will continue to be there as long as the MIC is pocketing all our treasure. I want to say in fairness that some good things are slowly happening there. The heavy jackboot of Saddam is now gone, the Kurds are more autonomous, and Iraq can no longer menace its neighbors. But, please remember those WERE NOT the reasons we invaded, these were reasons that were used AFTER we invaded. This was is the most profitable excercise of all time for the MIC, thats why we are there and will continue to be there indefinately!!

Because of the STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF THE LOCATION OF IRAQ - look at where they are. Would you rather have that ground with a US Flag sitting on it or be 100% terrorist controlled.
It is a war on terror - and some people don't just understand what is all involved - but the Bush Administration has done a poor job communicating this.

How can you say nobody wants us there? It is this kind of ignorance that is getting us in trouble and causing so much distention. If you are just listening to the news and ignorant people you have a problem. By the way, there is a lot more going on over there than you will ever see or hear thanks to our press that only want the blood and gore. Good news does not make news.

I've done time in Iraq and they do want us there, they just don't want us to stay for the long term (10+ years)
We need to be there until they can defend themselves. Once they can, we need to leave. Simple.
if we leave before, Iran can easily take them over, Terrorists will make it home and then it will cost us 10 times the ment we lost in three years to re-invade.
Lets accomplish the mission and then reflect instead of doing a knee-jerk reaction and pull out before it's time.

Melody, do you live in Iraq? No? Well then HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT NOBODY WANTS US THERE? Because the liberal media doesnt report on the GOOD things that happen and all the HAPPY people that are glad we overthrew Saddam and are trying to get rid of the terrorists who are killing THOUSANDS of Iraqi citizens? How bout you stop believing everything you read and know there is much more to the story than you could POSSIBLY know.

And you know this how? Have you been there and asked them or have you just been listening to people you don't know say they don't want us there? Funny how people I actually know have fought in Iraq and have had the Iraqi people thank them everyday!
