The wedding is in October. The location is about 370 miles away from most who will be invited.

Send out save the date cards as soon as you can. Then, send out the invitations about 8-10 weeks before the wedding. Make sure that you don't cut anyone from the guest list that has already received a save the date card, and make sure you have the RSVP date be at least a week before the wedding, so that you can check up on the ones that didn't RSVP.

In your invitation, it would be nice to include an insert with local hotels, particularly if you're reserving a hotel block. It's also very nice to plan activities for your out of town guests for the night or two nights before the wedding, so that they just aren't sitting in their hotel room all the time.

I would send out Save The dates first with the wedding locale information, this can give people an opportunity to make their arrangements well in advance. Be sure to include hotel information (I would recommend making arrangments to block a number of rooms at a hotel, doing this helps ensure lodging for everyone as well as a discount price). These should go out 6 months before hand so if you get them out by March you are good.
Invites go out 8 weeks before your wedding date, not enough time, do the Save the Dates.

General etiquette states that invitations are to be sent about 4-6 weeks prior for out of town guests and 4 weeks for locals. I would probably do 5-6 weeks so your out of town guests will have time to plan and make travel arrangements.

Mail save the date postcards ( they are inexpensive to have made) Mail them as soon as you get them, then mail the actual invitations 4-6 weeks before the wedding date. This will give people more than enoigh time to plan for the time off, or airfare if needed.

Give them at least three to four months lead time of notice. With a Fall wedding, you have a little more time (sicne you're unlikely to go up against vacations), but it's bets to give people plenty of time to save the date and book travel.

they should go out begining of Aug, with a return date of end of Aug so that you have time to call on those that forget to return the card. Helps you know who is all coming and gives them time to plan the trip!

A.S.A.P. The more notice they have the more likely they will be able to make plans to attend.
