If so, why would you do that and did it work?

It depends a lot on what the medication is; they are all different. Some things could be taken in double dose and it's not a problem; other stuff might actually be harmful or dangerous if you double it. If you think the dose isn't strong enough, it might be better to tell your doctor. I used to take Paxil and sometimes I took double doses when I had greater anxiety or depression--it helped. I got switched to Seroquel, I took a double dose of that once and felt like a zombie--I wish I never did it and I would never do it again.

yes, I did it cause the doctor had given the smallest dose posible and I found that the highest dose possible was still way below the dose if I doubled it. Yes it did work, but I don't recomend it unless you study a lot about the med's and really understand them. I also don't make a regular practice of that, as I don't want to get a tolorance to it.
