Shave your head and generously apply baby lotion twice a day for a week.

Hi Rain -

You are certainly not alone - a lot of people are plagued by the annoying white flakes that appear on the tops of their heads. Do not worry because it can be easily treated!

What you want to do is find an over-the-counter shampoo with the ingredient, zinc pyrithione (it's possible that the shampoo you are using may be excessively drying and you need to try a diferent one!). Wash your hair each day and make sure to leave the shampoo on your scalp for at least five minutes. Once you notice the flakes start to disappear, continue washing with the shampoo a few times a week. If the situation does not improve, your best bet is to contact your dermatologist.

In the meantime, check out http://skin.health.ivillage.com/psoriasisdryskin/dandruff.cfm

Good luck!

From many years experience into treatments of scalp and hair problems the basic cause of a flaking scalp(actually misnamed dandruff by shampoo manufacturers and others)is the harsh chemicals and irritants in shampoos(do a Google search "cause of dandruff"). Then we sometimes make problem worse by using other products also containing some of same harmfull ingredients! You should not continue to use. Get a very mild natural ingredients shampoo - also can be found with Google search.
TO HEAL SCALP AND HAIR DAMAGE try this very simple, safe, NATURAL treatment and cure. This REALLY WORKS and has been voted Best Answer by Asker(See profile).Use only a mild tea tree oil shampoo or nuetral selenium based shampoo - acts as an anti-fungal agent - with a few drops of tea tree oil added and wash less frequently. Shampoo companies love you to believe frequent washing is desirable but de-natures hair and scalp, causes thinning, even premature graying. Brush 25 to 35 strokes each day, quite vigorously, so you feel it stimulating scalp - will unplug hair shaft ducts, end flaking, reverse other damage & force new, well anchored growth. Massage scalp and hair with flaxseed oil or vitamin E oils, before or after brushing nightly, and wash off in the morning. Will revitalize & give hair a healthy sheen. See Improvement in about a week. Keep up a less frequent brushing and oil treatment to maintain health of scalp/hair. Also be aware that hair dryers, perms, tints, bleaches, straighteners, tanning booths or sunlamps harm scalp and hair. Entire body health, particularly digestive system matters. Be careful of excessive intake of fats, dairy products, sugars, chocolate, seafood, and peanuts. Consider a whole foods diet. Increase green leafy vegetables and raw foods. Vitamins help. Biotin, a B vitamin, in particlar. Found in brewer's yeast, nutritional yeast, whole grains, nuts. Lastly, often overlooked, get plenty of sun - a natural source of vitamin.

How long have you been using it? It may be part of the treatment where it knocks all the dandruff off of your head as you get a firmer, more healthy sclap. Try it for at least a week and if you're still having a problem ask a dermatologist.

There are at least 2 types, one is Selenium based, the other is Zinc based. Use as recommended; they take a while to work, maybe several weeks for some cases, but after that, if not effective, change the type of active ingredient and try again.

Just use very little shampoo and rinse well using cool water. You may have been using too much shampoo or not rinsing thoroughly or using hard or hot water.
