Would you be upset to find out that your child's teacher was working and had Strep? I know I would and as a daycare teacher find it odd that a boss would want you to work when you have strep!

I am the who has strep and I haven't been to work for 3 days. I started my meds yesterday after I went to the doc and my boss is giving me a hard time about not coming in! I told her I have to be on them for 24 hours but she dosen't seem to care

As a mom-thank you for staying home!!! Once you go one meds and can go back, that is fine. But face it-little kids will pick up a cup and sip or want a hug and a kiss on the cheek-you can spread it.
As someone who worked in day care eons ago-I am sure she wants to meet ratios and is focused on that. She may be in a panic if she can't find a sub or is way out of ratio now. But she should still be thinking of the kids. I hated to hear my son's old teachers (that I loved don't get me wrong) say they were feeling bad and still came to work. His old day care seemed to have a cold a week. His new one, well she has good subs and she asks staff to stay home if ill. I really respect her for that. My little one was a premie and his immune system isn't the tops so he picks up everything. to bad your boss doesn't see the big picture on this. Feel better!

I worked part-time in the most reputable day care in our town for 9 months. One of the main reasons I quit was because of the administration. Absolutely they wanted sick people to come to work because it was an inconvenience to find a substitute. But the double standard came when they expected all parents to take off work when their kids were sick.
I heard the secretary make a comment once that anyone who worked at the daycare who had kids should be required to have backup childcare for their children who were ill so she wouldn't have to find a sub. And if you called in sick yourself, then you must have been faking. "Show up to work in any condition" was their motto.
My daughter attended that daycare when I was working full time. I am now pregnant again and after seeing what went on behind the scenes, there is no way my next child will attend their facility.

Yes I would be mad if my child's teacher knowingly exposed him to a contagious illness. Your boss does not have the best interest of the children in mind and that is very sad. Stick to your guns. You need the antibiotics for at least 24 hours and you need to be fever free as well before returning to work.

Absolutely! Strep is quite contagious as well as potentially dangerous (possibly fatal) to babies and small children. Strep is nothing to fool with and I find it highly irregular that a boss of a daycare facility would want you to work regardless! Egads. No wonder we have such epidemics of this stuff!
I would contact the health department and report it.

I would be upset if she had not been on medication for at least 24 hours. Strep is contagious until you've been on medication for 24 hours. If she'd been on medicine for the proper time and didn't have a fever, I think it would be OK.

If someone has strep they should be on their antibiotic for 24 hours before resuming work, school, etc. Let's hope she wasn't working prior to being diagnosed. If you (or your exposed child) has a fever, upset stomach, or sore throat, contact your Dr. and let them know you have been exposed to strep.

I would hope they are being treated with antibiotics. I would think they would extend the same courtesies that they expect us to extend - we cannot bring the children in if they haven't been on antibiotics for 24 hours, so that shoudl apply to adults as well.
BUT if they have a missing worker, then it is likely that they will not meet their ratios for the day and may have to close a room.. It's a tough call.

Well, when you have been on antibiotics for 24 hours it is generally considered safe. You have to realize that the other option might have been to turn you away and not take the kids (they have to have certain ratios)...perhaps the back-up person was out for some reason. You could try asking about it to see
if they just thought it was ok or if it was some dire situation or if she had been on antibiotics.

Well for home daycares there isn't much of a choice. You close and loose all pay and have angry parents who have to find last miniute daycare or you stay open and risk getting children sick which angers parents also so either way it is not a winning situation. So I do not close unless I am really really sick which is never.

As long as they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours it shouldn't be contagious. I would have an issue with a teacher working with strep that hadn't been properly treated with antibiotics.
