Adobe reader 8 is free here
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_acrobat_reader/

but Foxit Reader is also free, a smaller download and will load a pdf much quicker than Adobe
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

but if you are happy with Adobe and just wish it was quicker, you can get this free tool here

You can go to www.adobe.com and download the "Reader" program for free. There will be a link to Acrobat Reader.

The full version of Acrobat costs money. You would only need this if you want to create PDF files. If you need to do this, depending on the features you need, there are other programs out there that allow you to create PDF files as well. One would be http://www.pdffactory.com. Most of these type programs install themselves as a printer driver and when you've create a document (i.e. Microsoft Word) and print, you use that "pdf driver" and it outputs a PDF for you.

Go to Adobe's website (below) and you can download Acrobat Reader 8 for free. Acrobat professional (where you can edit and create PDFs) is not free and needs to be purchsed.

microsoft installation cleanup is a red herring. it's not working because you don't have the "microsoft visual basic runtimes" installed...but the microsoft installation cleanup won't help you here anyway. restart your computer in safe mode (google for instructions if you're not sure how to do this), don't open any programs. close any which open automatically. go into the control panel and open the add/remove programs icon. switch back to the control panel and close it - this leaves the add/remove programs open. now uninstall :)
