The number of Los Angeles County jail inmates identified as suspected illegal immigrants nearly doubled in the year since the Sheriff's Department started investigating their legal status.
The number red-flagged to face possible deportation once they serve their sentences went from 3,050 in 2005 to 5,829 last year.
The numbers skyrocketed from 658 in the second quarter of 2005 to 1,685 in the third quarter of 2006.
"The benefit is these people who are committing crimes aren't being released onto our streets to commit more crimes. They are being removed from the United States," said Jim Hayes, director of the Los Angeles field office for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The sharp increase in potential deportees is believed to be the result of more screening, rather than an increase in the number of illegal immigrants in the jails.
They are increasing daily .

wow your barely noticing? what planet have you been on? deportations have always happened, they happened in the 70's,80's,90's and now. the problem isn't deporting all these people the problem is that they can deport 100 people today and while they do that about 1000 enter the U.S everyday. i give those people that get deported about a month's time before they are back here and working again. its called the revolving door method, nothing gets fixed and things seem to get worse.

They can hardly say they are trying when they don't even pluck the low hanging fruit. DEFINITELY all twice illegal (and gang members who are illegal) should be deported.
I am glad they are doing this. However, they won't have credibility so long as they are deporting less each month than come or overstay each day.

THey've been deporting. Only the state governments are taking advantage of this opportunity. We need this to happen on a national level. Imagine how many are getting in in comparison to how many are leaving.
