Depends on how good a scanner you want. Stand alone scanners are capable of really high resolution scans and some are even capable of scanning film negatives and slides. If you just need a scanner for everday use, the all in ones are perfect. I use both, one for everyday, and the other for my graphics work. They just plug into a USB port and you just install a driver...nothing to it.

The multi-function units are very competitively price and save you from having mixed drivers. Check out Canon. The ones I have used are awsome.

You should be able to plug in to your USB port and load the software. Nothing too complicated. Getting the scans right will take a little practice, but not rocket science.
