Dogs only understand basic commands and small words.
They have learned behavior that is associated with the word.
I have friends who give commands in German or Spanish to their dogs. The rest of the time they speak english to the dogs. Both dogs are very well trained and seem to understand each language. At least to some point.
I train in English as that is the only language I am fluent in and also use hands signals with it. That way when I am in the field and want the dog to down with out making noise I use the hand signal. It helps so you do not frighten away game.

If you tell your dog to sit in English AND incorporate hand signals he will not only be trained to the word but the hand signals so regardless of language you say sit in he'll sit if you use the hand signals.

Now... If you don't use hand signals along w/ verbal command you'll have to reteach your dog the command in a different language. Pretty much starting from step one.

Good Luck

Can learn simple commands in any language...they learn by repetition...you could tell it to jump and have it sit....it's all about the words you use when teaching commands...good luck...most police dogs are German speaking!

it's all about what the dog has been trained to listen to. If you start using a different language to train him, he will eventually understand what you are telling him to do.
