It depends. Is the TV you are buying HDTV? If no then I see no reason to.

However if it is HDTV, then maybe ... If you have a recent vintage DVD player that can output progressive scan (480p) it isn't really necessary as you will get a very good picture. However if you have an older DVD player or have the spare cash I woudn't hesistate to go for an upconverting DVD player.

Whatever you do, please make sure you use the proper cabling to get the best possible picture. With an older progressive scan DVD player that would be component video cables. With an upconverting DVD player that would be HDMI cable.

but dont get sucked in to buying "monster" type cables. They are overpriced.

Go for an LCD set of 720P or greater. The top rung of that ladder is 1080p. While 1080p is the limit now, there is no reason to think that this cap won't be raised in the future. 1080p sets are mostly 50" or larger at this time. The purchase of a new DVD player should wait until the blu-ray/HD-DVD controversy is settled. The players are too expensive right now. After the market has selected which format will prevail, the prices will fall as competitors come into the marketplace.

I would wait until the prices on the HD/Blue Ray DVD players come down and until the format mess is sorted out. The original DVD player will work fine and will give you a great picture on your LCD. Now when the prices do fall, you will be ready with your HD TV. Be sure that you purchase a true 1080i LCD instead of a 720p. Many companies are calling their TVs HD when they are 720p which is not HD but rather enhanced definition.

No, you don't, you can even still watch your VCR if you want to...

Don't get an upconverting DVD player if yours is working fine, hold your money for the winner of the Blueray VS HD-DVD fight instead.
