The money belonged to the Iraqi's, but the bigger issue here that conservatives on this thread don't seem to want to grasp is what if a large or even small percentage of that money ended up in the hands of the insurgents? It boggles my mind that we could be so utterly careless about the distribution of this money. And people wonder why Americans are fed up with Bush's war. The incompetence of the Bush administration is astounding.

Your statement regarding troops not having proper equipment and body armor just goes to prove that either you're so out of touch with the military, or you only get your news from biased sources...
Do some research. Maybe actually talk to a soldier about the body armor they have now rather than using talking points from 3 years ago?
Regarding the money, last time I was in Iraq I didn't see any ATM machines. Hard currency is the only thing that works outside the developed world. You might know that if you were better informed...
I'm retired Army, been to Iraq 3 times. Nothing chaps my 4th point of contact more than when idiot liberals say "Our Troops." It's an all volunteer force. Your troops went away 30 years go with the draft...

Maybe you should be asking
What Happened to the $20 Billion Dollars that the Iraqi people entrusted to the US when you so kindly booted Saddam. Yes 20 Billion dollars of someone Else's money wasted in just 14 months.

CUTTING EDGE - IRAQ'S MISSING BILLIONS
This documentary reveals what has happened to the billions of dollars of Iraqi reconstruction money entrusted to the American Coalition. In just fourteen months, the CPA burned its way through nearly $20 billion. But no one can account for where it all went. Iraq's infrastructure is worse than ever before. Operating theatres are flooded with sewage. New-born babies are dying for lack of basic equipment. In this investigation, Iraqi doctor Ali Fadhil goes in search of the missing money. He uncovers a horrific story of fraud, incompetence and corruption. As word spread of the kind of money that could be made in Iraq, foreign contractors flocked in. According to this documentary, companies like Custer Battles billed for work they hadn't done and charged the CPA a 1000% mark up for their expenses. While dodgy contractors were making millions, the Iraqi people were left paying the price. According to the United States' own figures, Iraq's essential services are worse than before the war.

The depth of stupidity cannot be measured on this one, but a full time senate investigation is certainly in order. There are a lot of dirty hands involved here, and all they need do is get to a few key people and the rest will be running to the authorities to cut a deal.

You've spoken to the soldiers and every single one in Iraq said they don't have the proper equipment to fight? Wars cost money, what do you expect? I don't remember hearing this much controversy when the war started in 2003. Kinda funny how money changes things.

We did the same to rebuild Europe after the Cold War. It was called the Marshall Plan. How come you are not complaining about that one?

Wow... it says it right in the article you linked to: "The money, which had been held by the United States, came from Iraqi oil exports, surplus dollars from the U.N.-run oil-for-food program and frozen assets belonging to the ousted Saddam Hussein regime."
It is THEIR money! We SHOULD be giving it back to them... it is rightfully theirs.
But why am I not surprised a liberal wants to keep someone else's money?

I can just picture a house in Baghdad with wallpaper made of $100 bills.
There's a right way and a wrong way to return confiscated funds. Dropping them from an airplane is the wrong way.
