Potty training a dog takes a lot of patience and consistency. He thinks the closet is his toilet, and you'll have to teach him otherwise.

Is he being crated during the day, or just limited to one room or a small space? Has he been taught any potty training at all, like going outside or on puppy pads? The problem with locking a dog in a room, or even a small space, just teaches them that wherever they are, that's where they go.

Crating a dog at night is the best way to avoid this. The reason that crates are such a useful tool in potty training is that dogs are den animals; in the wild, they create small spaces for themselves to sleep in, and being very clean animals, they never potty where they sleep.

My guess is if you limit access to the closet, he'll just go somewhere else. You'll need to establish a routine with him that encourages pottying outside (or wherever you want him to go).

Stick with it...be patient, firm and consistent. If it means your dog doesn't sleep with you at night until he 'gets the hint', it has to be that way. IMO, selling him is just giving the problem to somebody else. You're not doing the dog any favors.

Good luck!

Why not put those puppy pads down in the closet. My puppy doesn't go at night.I have him crate trained and when we get up he goes outside first thing in the morning. He is a JRT/mix and can go at 11:30pm til 5:30am with no problem...Try a crate he may just be wandering too much at night.Get it just a little larger than him,a cat one would fit a Yorkie.Be patient, and don't get rid if him.Give him a last chance.......

Some things you have to do is put him on a feeding schedule or limit his access to his food like only keep his foodbowl out when you are around to walk him immediately after he eats.

Also when he poops wrap the poop up and take him and it outside deposit the poop on the ground then take him for a walk. Eventually he'll get the message that he is to do his pooping outside. This is how we housebroke our sheltie who had similar problems.
