A very good test for detecting stones is an IVP - Intravenous Pyelogram. Contrast (dye) is injected into a vein and watched as it travels through your kidneys, ureters, and bladder.

Having kidney stones is one of the MOST painful things in the world. Usually, the pain hits you all of a sudden, not gradually. And the pain is unbearable. I've seen grown men on the floor crying in pain. (Not to scare you) An x-ray isn't really the best way to see a stone, a CAT scan is usually done or an ultrasound/sonogram. Check with your doc about a possible UTI (urinary track infection) which can cause burning and pain. But get checked out because a UTI can turn into a kidney infection if left untreated. Good luck!

Sounds more like a urinary infection. If in doubt, go to your MD and have a urine examination done- that will detect bacteria, or blood, or crystals, or some other hint at the cause of the pain
As for kidney stones you need either an X-ray or Ultrasound examination- and they will not detect the very small stones (like 1-2 mm in diameter). I know that 1 mm sounds very tiny, but the tube between the kidney and the bladder is 1-2 mm in internal diameter- so a 1 mm stone is quite enough to cause lots of pain (the big stones stay put and don't usually hurt)

Lay off the coffee and soda's and drink nothing but water, cranberry juice, and milk for the next week or two, if you are having trouble urinating. It sounds like the beginning of a kidney infection to me. I get these once in a while and the water and cranberry juice usually clears it right up.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

There isn't much you can do, to see if you have kidney stones, but the doctors can test you, if they only gave you an X-ray then I suggest going back and having them take blood samples and urine samples.
Also I take it your urine isn't bloody, thats really the only symptom of kidney stones, that you can notice yourself.

I would go back to the doctor and tell him exactly the symptoms you stated in your question. Obviously somethings wrong. Go get it fixed.
