Well, if you want ancient history, back in the early 70's, I was working on a Cyber main frame at college in FORTRAN and wanted to use the new compiler MNF (Minnesota FORTRAN) for a particular feature. I was in the computer lab fairly late at night and the terminals were pretty well filled with students on end of term projects. When I typed in the command line, not only did my terminal go away, but so did everyone else. Through the window, I could see the operators running around like disturbed ants. After ten minutes or so, the computer came back up and I checked my file and typed in the same command, pushed enter and ... down went everybody. Once is an oddity, twice might be a coincidence, three times .... Ten minutes later, the machine was back up and I tried tentatively and down it went. I very carefully folded up my work and left the room to the moans of downed users.
When I reported the problem to management, it turned out that MNF had been installed aiming at one library file that was for another compiler and it went berserk in the machine. Although they had been trumpeting the availability of MNF, I was the first to use it for the new feature.

Well Mike I don't think that what the question had in mind (sic)...

There are however very few mainframes out there still connected to the web in such a way as to be vulnerable to attacks resulting in a crash..

Those that are run UNIX... so are open to pure UNIX hacks.. and any of us older UNIX sys ops could accomplish a crash...

Crashing after gaining access is no real problem... gaining access without compromising yourself IS..

The real issue is - why bother ?
.... your Pakistani friend got some thrill out of it ...
I guess the youngsters that got thrills out of burning ants with a magnifying glass, now get thrills finding a way to bring down a 'mainframe'...

Let me tell you this ...

IT WOULD BE NO GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT

Its been done... been there done that... forget it !
