From a medical standpoint, when you sneeze your heart stops. So we say God Bless You so that your heart will start back up. This is originally where God Bless You all started...hope this helps you. I thought that it was very cool when I learned this and I've never forgotten it. So when someone sneezes say God Bless You instead of Bless You so that their heart will for sure start beating again.

Well it is said that when a person sneezes, that the devil has put a curse on you and by someone saying God bless you, that means that they are asking God to bless you of the curse that the devil has put upon you. This is quoting some elderly relatives of mine. Not my idea. But, if you really think about it, it has a lot to do with ancestry of the past years.

A long time ago it was said that when people sneezed they blew their soul out through the sneeze. I guess saying God bless you was supposed to put your soul back. I say Bless You because I guess that's what we say now.

Its my understanding that your heart can skip a beat...I have also read that you can lose concentration (like from driving) for up to 12 sec for a really good sneeze....so the God Bless You is a blessing in good intent....that has just become a cultural nice habit....

As far as I can remember it goes back to the Plague in the 1600, which is where Ring a Ring o Roses came from. England at that time was religious, with God all knowing and seeing. If someone sneezed there was a mortal fear of illnes so they sent a prayer to God to protect them. Hence God Bless You.

The reason I was taught was...when you sneeze your heart actually skips or stop beating for a moment, and people say God Bless as it starts to beat again.

I Medieval times the people thought that your spirit left you when you sneezed so they said, "God Bless You." These days people say it to be polite. There is no religious meaning to it.

I believe it means that when you sneeze your heart actually stops and God bless you is a quick way to bless you if you were to die suddenly.
