It isn't rude, but it isn't polite either.

Definitely ! A yawn involves a strong exhalation of air that contains water droplets, even if not apparent to the native eye. In the same way as a cough, ( if again your mouth is uncovered,) these droplets have the potential to spread disease. Besides, do you really want to open your mouth in a wide gape and give people, especially complete strangers direct visual access to your caps, braces and whatever else... ?

If you yawned in my face or coughed for that matter, I would not be a happy bunny nor would yourself I suppose. Anywhere where germs can escape must be covered, and nobody wants to see a gaping mouth anyway. And it is rude as most people will think you are bored with them. Anyway, a lady should not have to ask.

Yes, it is rude, and here's why: right or wrong, it sends a message that you are bored with present company. We often yawn for other reasons, but the message we send is, "You're boring me!" If you can't stop the yawn, at least have the courtesy to hide it.

I don't know. But it's very handy to place your hand over your mouth whilst yawning when you have false teeth. Specially if they are the ones you got from lost and found on Victoria station which don't fit quite properly and fall out on the first sign or an open orbiculares orris.

Yes, it is considered rude not to cover your mouth when you yawn in public. People don't generally need to see the piece of spinach suck in your teeth.

this is weird cuz it was a totally weird thing that I noticed in Israel, but no one did.
then I thought to myself, hmmm do I? Now everytime I yawn I am in like mental dilemma of whether or not to cover my mouth!!!
lol!
but then I guess I prefer to cover my mouth. and i have yawned and not covered my mouth, not realising how tired I was and then said excuse me afterwards.
I guess if you cover though you are less likely to offend!

Yes if you do it in front of people who find it rude :p as in a formal meeting, or with new acquaintances. I yawn like a dog in front of my husband and then we laugh about it, no rudeness claimed here.
