Mojak...wake up! I ASKED a question. I didn't accuse anyone of anything. I just asked because I didn't know.

I've always wondered about this, too. I'm glad you asked and have enjoyed hearing from muslims about their perspective. Thank-you muslims for answering!

Good day, all!

I love dogs, they have great personalities! We just can't keep them in the house, because they are dirty. Wolfmuslim is correct. Dogs do not have a clean mouth. I've read about this ... they have special bacteria in their mouth that protects them from all the gross things they eat. But we aren't protected. Plus there's something in their saliva that sticks to things, that just doesn't come off with water. Haven't you noticed that? That's why we have to wash things that a dog's saliva has touched, once with earth, and six times with water. I'm going to look for a scientific article about dog's saliva, and I'll post it here if I find it.

May the peace, blessings and mercy of God be upon you

The correct opinion regarding Dogs, is that they MAY NOT reside in your house, and that contact with them makes you impure (so you have to purify yourself again to for prayers). However, Dogs are permissible for the purpose of guarding your property.

Volume 4, Book 54, Number 448:

Narrated Abu Talha:

I heard Allah's Apostle saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."

Volume 8, Book 73, Number 38:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "While a man was walking on a road. he became very thirsty. Then he came across a well, got down into it, drank (of its water) and then came out. Meanwhile he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. The man said to himself "This dog is suffering from the same state of thirst as I did." So he went down the well (again) and filled his shoe (with water) and held it in his mouth and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave him." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?" He said, "(Yes) There is a reward for serving any animate (living being) ."

Although dislike of dogs is something cultural, like my parents for instance, my mom especially is scared of dogs. But I am not. Even though I was biten by a Jack Russel Terrier walking down the street!

Peace Be With You

Actually we dont just dislike them you know..
We believe that dogs are dirty, and if they enter a house angels won't enter it either..
and if a person got licked.bitten by dog any touch of saliva or/and urine a person has to clean up after that several times and one of those times must be with sand because it was discovered that there is a specific germ in the dog's saliva and urine and a worm as well that is quite dangerous to people's health..and the only way to really get rid of that is by using sand..it was scientifically proven actually..
But a Muslim can keep a dog for security reasons or/and for farming..other than that it is prohibited..but we don't just hate dogs or anything...

I am a newly reverted Muslim, but I do believe reading somewhere that Muslims are supposed to kind to animals. This is approved by Allah. Also, I love pet dogs and I have an adorable toy poodle who melts my heart whenever I look at him. His name is Percy and he has been in my life for around 13 years.

My Muslim friends who are coming over for dinner tonight think our Schipperkes are adorable. They do not pet them, though, and I keep the dogs in a separate room when my friends come over, out of respect for their religion's cleanliness requirements.

They do not have pet dogs themselves because they could not keep them in the house.

Here's a good site for more information about pet animals and Islam:

We don't hate dogs. It's just we can't TOUCH them when they are wet. Not like pigs. We can't even touch them. Some Muslims in place keep dogs as their pets but I don't know if this is somekind of a sin... *Mr. Marbles, watch what are u writing about muslims. U have a problem?*

No we don't dislike dogs, it is just not advisable to keep them inside an apartment except for serious guarding purposes. In a garden it is ok, if a person has one.

No, it's just a matter of good hygiene. Dogs in third world countries carry a lot of disease and filthiness.

No. They are just trying to avoid catching diseases. Islam requires a high standard of cleanliness.
