Why do drivers make things so complicated for themselves on the road. The rules are clearly outlined in the Highway Code. They are not hidden or encrypted. If everyone drove accordingly the traffic would flow much more smoothly and driving would be a pleasure.
It doesn't take a PhD to know that.
Driving is the one single thing you will perform where you will require the use of all your senses to work harmoniously and to be fully concentrated on the task.

NIKO23: you can hardly compare driving to coitus, as you will not be travelling at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour in a forward momentum whilst lying horizontal.

I agree.
We often see questions about the highway code on here.
People just seem to make up answers and then ARGUE that they are right, even those the highway code clearly says different.
Try asking a question like "who has right of way when pulling out onto a motorway" and see what drivel you get.
Unfortunately people just don't care about the impact they have on others and seem happy to stumble from one risk to the next, dragging us with them.

Well, in the area that I live, most people are foreign and I suspect that they do not have UK driving licenses. Therefore they have most probably never read the Highway Code.
That sounds racist or something and I don't mean it like that ... my own driving license was issued in New Zealand. I never bothered to get a UK one as I don't drive here - I live in London and there's no need to. Legally (within the first year of arrival) I would have been able to drive here without ever having read the Highway Code - my New Zealand license was authorization enough for me to do this. Yet New Zealand and the UK have very different rules so why does knowing the rules in one country permit you to drive in the other?
I do not understand why the police turn a blind eye to driving offences. Just yesterday I almost got hit by a car - I was on a crossing and the driver chose to ignore the fact that his light was on red and just drive through anyway. There was a cop car parked right next to the crossing with two officers in it, and at least one of them definitely saw what happened, but didn't do anything,

A main reason is that the cars of to-day are quiet, smooth and easy to drive, drivers feel insulated from the weather and feel "it cant happen to them"
You may have answered your question your self when you say you have to use all your senses, there are a lot of drivers who don't use any sense or logic, men as well as women,
If your look at the stats relating to accidents you will most likely see its the 17 to 20 year olds that cause the most accidents, The logical thing to me is to increase the age of driving to 21, but when do governments apply logic ?
Like you, I agree you don't need to be highly qualified to drive.
reduce the risks by applying common sense,
Road accidents - facts and figures
In 2005 a total of 6,858 people were reported as injured in road collisions in Surrey.
64 people were killed
520 people were seriously injured
6,274 people were slightly injured
The table below shows these headline figures for the last five years.
Year Fatal Serious Slight Total
2001 53 658 6676 7387
2002 66 629 6111 6806
2003 62 494 5899 6455
2004 72 576 6254 6902
2005 64 520 6274 6858
These are just an example, would be nice if they could reduce them by at least 50%, I just wonder what a further breakdown of these stats would give us if you exclude accidents for drivers over 21 ???

It also does not take a PhD to know that in Germany, the rules constantly change to adapt to current conditions. Hence, an LCD speed limit sign will reflect 80 mph in clear weather and no traffic, and will reflect 60 mph when there is rush hour a few miles up, and will reflect 40 mph when the rush hour hits its area.
Such rules actually make more sense, and people are willing to abide.
Oh, and they have these cameras everywhere, I believe, that actually measure how many "perforated" line segments there are between your bumper and that of the car in front of you.
Hmmm... making sense and then closely monitoring. Sounds a lot better than our dilapidated system, which just screams for rebellion.

I completely agree however, I also think that you need all your senses have some great harmonious sex as well. None the less we should actually write a rule of the road code down after our response!

What I want to know is why do people cruise in the passing lane. I hate it when someone is in the passing lane and cars are having to pass them in the slow lane. Cops ought to write tickets for this.

the highway code is long out dated, as car tech is far more advanced now than when the highway code was 1st introduced in the 60's thats why people find it difficult to stick to it
