A Guide Dog is trained so that it knows, when its harness is put on it is "working". When it is not wearing its harness, it is an ordinary dog.

The harness that a guide dog wears is its 'trigger'.

Once the harness is put on the dog and the owner takes hold of the handle, the dog knows that it is working.

When the harness is removed or when the owner lets go of the handle and uses the dog's lead then the dog knows it is off-duty.

A working dog's pleasure is from pleasing it's owner. They are happy to assist and love to work. They are a special breed all their own (in the sense that they are not normal pets). Many owners of service dogs do play with their dog and they have fun that way, but their true pleasure is in their work.

The dogs will know from your body language. They can sense things that we cannot. They take their work very seriously, and know when they can play, and when it's time to focus. Usually when they return home, it's safe for them to have a little fun. But, don't forget, they do have fun on the job too. They love to help, and be payed attention to. They feel a sense of achievement from work, and will do it willingly.

when their harness is on, they are working, when it is not, they are not. For other assistance dogs, they dont see it as work, its all fun, they do what is asked out of love, and when not being asked to do anything they relax.

When their owners tell them it's okay. It's work first, then play. They are very disciplined.
