You're going to receive a lot of suggestion - things such as: Smack the dog's nose, flick the dog's nose, knee the dog in it's chest, or pull the dog's ears.

These suggestions do work for the moment but do not train the dog for the long haul. You're going to have this dog for another 10-15 years - you dont' want a large dog like this jumping on you THAT long.

To break an old habit and retrain a new one takes some time, patience and consistancy.

Snap a leash on your dog while he's in the house. When company comes over put the dog in sit. If he's in sit and calm - no barking, whining, shaking, etc pet the dog. DO NOT be excited. Don't talk in the baby voice, or pet him in a frenzy.

A few strokes, howdy rover and that's it. If the dog is NOT in sit - ignore him all together. Do this excerse even when people aren't coming to the house to reinforce this behavior.

When you're coming home and there's no chance for a leash all you have to do is square your shoulders, look straight ahead and keep on walking. Don't yell at him, don't grab him, smack him etc. Positive or negative you're reinfocing his behavior.

He's jumping on you for attention. If you give him that attention -though yelling - you're giving him what he wants so he will continue to jump.

So ignore him, take your shoes and coat off etc. When he's a bit calmer, tell him to sit. When he sits THEN give him attention.

This is will TRAIN him for his life to sit to receive attention - not just for an instant quick fix.

I've had dogs run full throttle at me - only to sit and stare waiting for me to pet them!

Good Luck

I had the same problem with my heeler mix. We're still working on it, but I tell people that come over to ignore her until she is calm. Then she can be rewarded for her calm behavior with petting and attention. Never allow people to pet your dog when he jumps up on them. If he is rewarded when he does something bad, even after you say no and he tries it again, he's not going to get it. It's a dominance thing as well. As far as your sons friends, it's their energy that your dog is feeding off of. You need to get younger people calm while ignoring the dog.

Ask a friend to help train your dog using these methods:
keep your dog leashed.,put your dog in a sit and step on the leash so it cannot get up or move aound. Have your friend approach with the understanding the dog gets NO attention from either of you unless it's sitting and quiet. Keep treats handy so you can reward your dog for positive behavior. It will take several sessions for the dog to learn proper behavior that he will get rewarded for but its well worth your effort. Good luck
