They are NOT the tribes of natural Israel (Revelation 7:4-8) for this reason:
There never was a tribe of Joseph, the tribes of Ephraim and Dan are not included in the list, and the Levites were set aside for service in connection with the temple but were not reckoned as one of the 12 tribes. (Numbers 1:4-16)
Revelation 5:9, 10 tells who ARE. They are persons bought out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, who will rule as kings over the earth, where righteous mankind will live. See Psalms 37: 9-11, 29. That was God's original purpose for man, and his purpose never changed, even when Adam and Eve sinned.

The chosen 144,000 have the mission to keep watch zealously over God's Law, to reanimate the people in their journey and to defend the faith. They will be warriors of peace, teachers within God's wisdom, doctors for all illnesses, comforters and prophets. They will be reunited when the time comes without it being an obstacle that some are in spirit, and others are incarnated. The term 'childern of Israel' doesn't refer only to the Jews but is a symbolic term that refers to the universal family.
"And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand (144,000) of all the tribes of the children of Israel." Book of Revelation 7:4

They are the "little flock" who have been annointed or chosen by God to join Jesus Christ in heaven and rule as Kings and Priests with him. They have been "bought" from the earth for this purpose. They are the only Christians who will go to heaven. The remaining faithful ones will reap the benefits of their rulership here on the earth.

Not the Jehovah's witness for sure. They are the chosen men the will be spreading the gospel around the world. They will be the new evangelists in the tribulation time. You no longer going to see an American preaching in the middle of town but an Israelite or Jew. they will be 12,000 from each tribe of Israel, 12,000 men set apart by God to give men a second chance. They are ready to go now.
As we study the warnings of the seven trumpets, we will find that society did not heed God's warnings. Instead society used its disciplines to serve other gods. As a result society experienced the hellish cost of doing so. Yes: from John's vantage point there was coming a time when not only the trees - individual nations - would be hurt, but society and its structures as well. However the original 144,000 converts to Christianity did not suffer that hurt. As "virgins" they were spared the torments of the tribulation.
However there is a great multitude which comes out of great tribulation, but that tribulation does not effect their stand before the Lamb. They stand in white robes, with palms in their hands, honoring God and the Lamb for His Salvation. This results in all the angels falling on their faces before the throne in worship to God. When Solomon dedicated the temple (2 Chron. 5:13,14) the praise of God by the people resulted in the glory of the Lord being so strong the priests could not stand to minister. In Revelation 7:11 it is implied that the worship by the tribulation saints makes it impossible for the angels to remain standing. Is that worship or what?
Yes the 144,000 sang a song that the tribulation saints could not learn. Their experience with God was unique, a virgin experience, undefiled, they experienced the gospel in its purest form. However for those of us who have experienced God's salvation in the tribulation, we to have a powerful place of worship. The angels of heaven will not be able to stand in its splendor. I can just imagine what happens to the devil and his angels at that point. He will be flattened, as if run over by a steam roller.
God's response to this worship is like a Father's tender care for his favored child. That response leads us into the opening of the seventh seal. When it is opened heaven is enveloped by an awesome silence. This silence stands in absolute contrast to the bombardment of sight and sound in the opening of the first six seals.

The number is symbolic, not literal, just as the rest of Revelation is symbolic. The interpretation of this vision as given by Jehovah's Witnesses is utterly false. God's grace and plan of salvation is not limited to a mere 144,000.

A large number of people. John (the author) is using Jewish symbolism. Not 12 people (the number of Jewish tribes), not even 12 times that number, but 1000 times that. Revelation is full of rich symbolism, you just simply need to see its context.
Elsewhere, John speaks of an innumerable multitude - but here he is playing with the concept of the perfect number of the people of God.

Kevin M gave a good answer. It is the fullness of those who belong to Jesus who have already died "fallen asleep" in Jesus and have gone to be with Him. The innumerable number John uses is the complete number or all time (including those not yet born) who will reign with Christ. God never gives us the exact number but gives us a symbolic number to understand what He means. Even as God is said to own the cattle on a thousand hills means He owns them all, of when we take refuge under His wing we don't think God has wings but that He protects us.

It is the number of Jews that will come to the Lord in the first half of the tribulation. The early manuscripts literally read Having His Name and The Father's Name upon their forehead which supports the Doctrine of the Trinity
