Does it boot at all after the message? There are DOS commands such as find/windows/config/system32/sys and you can maybe do it that way. An easier way is to start the boot up process and press F8 intermittently (not every second or the keyboard may freeze) and arrow down to Last Known Good Configuation and try that. Start booting and click F12 for Boot Options and select Safe Mode w/CD support and find the old one in your windows/config/system32 file rename it to old and have the CD ready to replace it or you could pay someone like me 40 bucks an hour and save yourself the frustration.

well dear answer is in your question, but i clarify/explain it.
it depends on what system you have assembled pc or branded pc if you have branded pc then insert recovery cd which you got with your system and if you have assembled system then you do insert windows xp bootable cd rom in cd drive and then reboot your system and after checking your system configuration (be patience) and then it take you to 3 options in which you find Press r for repair so press r and follow the instruction very carefully and after that you find your pc all right, get well
