We are frequent visitors to France and want to know how much a 10 litre box of wine (the bag in the box type) actually weighs in Kg so that we can bring some back on the plane. We will need to check it into the hold as no longer allowed to carry it on board as hand luggage.

Ok. You got the answer already. The metric scale is based on the weight of water, and so with wine weighing a similar amount as water (actually a little less since the alcohol content is of a lighter weight) you get 1 cc weighing 1 gram, or 1000 cc weighing 1000 grams. So, 1 liter is a Kg. But, my question in return: You can get all kinds of box wine in this country. Why waste your wine allowance by not bringing in something really wonderful from France? You can pack a couple bottles of wine into each of your roll-aways safely and come home with something special. Good luck, and enjoy your trip!

At 20 degrees centigrade 1 litre of water weighs 1 KG. At different temperatures the volume will decrease or increase but the overall weight of a 10L box of wine will remain the same.

10L of wine will probably weigh slightly less than 10 kg (since alcohol is lighter than water) but it isn't sufficently different to worry about, and the continer will weigh a little also - so work with the weight 10kg becaue it will be around about that.

The metric system works in that 1 litre of water weighs a kg. Therefore 10l of wine will weigh about 10kg plus the weight of the box.
