What about my dvd player? It's about 18 months old so I don't think it upconverts. Will I be able to get a good picture with that dvd player?

If you want to watch TV in HD then you need to have a HD directv cable box also. To get local HD channels you also need a HD antenna. To get HD cable channels you need to pay an extra $10 a month to directv. There's not that many HD channels right now.

The DVD player will have the same picture it has now. There's no point hooking it up with a hdmi or components cables since it's not an upconvert, blue-ray, or hd-dvd. To get a better picture invest in an upconvert dvd. They usually cost around $100 now. It's too early to invest in a blue-ray or hd-dvd since we don't know you will win this format war yet. Plus they're too expensive right now.

No you don't HAVE to get an HDMI cable but it will provide the best picture from your 360. The LN40B640 has 2 composite hookups. Its worth noting however, that older model 360s do not have HDMI so if you decide to go the HDMI route you might want to make sure your 360 has an HDMI port. If it doesn't you'll have to use the HD composite cable anyway which is going to run you about $30 new ($20 or so used) if your 360 didn't come with it. The HD Composite cable for 360 also has an optical out for surround sound as well as the normal red and white RCA plugs so you won't miss out on digital surround sound if you eventually do buy a home theater system.

HDMI will provide both the digital and analog inputs for your television and other than power is all you need to enjoy HD at its highest detail. One suggestion on the HDMI cable, check out monoprice.com, they are selling HDMI cables for less than $20.00 and they are superior quality. I have them and like you I have chosen a 37" 1080P television (Mitsubishi LT37131). As to up-conversion on the DVD player, again I have one and it look good, not great once you have seen a true 1080 signal, you notice the difference on up-conversion. Having said that, I must say it looks fantastic when you compare it to the 480 lines of a standard DVD. You will like what you see.
