Short distances of about 200-500 kms can be travelled by trains. During summers it is preferable to travel by ac1 or 2 or in chair car. Winters in India is mild and pleasant. One can also travel by second class. Long distances becomes tedious and hence flights are preferred mode of transport for the rich and business trips. Money wise there isn't much difference these days. It is the airport tax that makes flight charges marginally more than ac1, ac2 or chair car.
