The pictures i have obtained from the web are too "Pixcalated" which means they do not show a clear image when placed on the site.
The site is for children which live in a deprived area of South Wales in the UK and will be used during their holidays.
Any help will be great.

I would suggest you try Dover Books.
They have loads of books which are royalty free, which means once you buy the books you can use the images (almost) as much as you like.
They have a pretty good selection on Mythology from Japanese to Greek to Aztec etc. and they have other things like mermaids, unicorns and sea monsters.
I think there are some restrictions with regards to using too many in one publication and you're obviously not allowed to sell them on.
Some come with a disc (PC and Mac) with the images scanned in at 300dpi and would therefore be easily resized for web (72dpi) and it avoids any scanning. They are about £17 for around 300 images (if you get the discs) but it does vary. I think it's pretty good value for money.
Good luck!

I suggest that you find some older published pictures that are "in the public domain" (to be safe, say over 100 years old) and scan them. You may find line drawings or even lithographs in older books of mythology, in larger public or educational libraries. Make sure you get permission before you scan them; your explanation may be adequate to obtain such permission. Also, do not forget to credit your source; the web is full of images which have been pirated from their legal owners, and doing so could make you (or others) liable to prosecution.
