There are actually gnostic texts that imply he did indeed have a wife and perhaps children but they were delted and destroyed by the catholics long ago. We have only small pieces of them now

If you read through the Bible, you will find that God considers a woman being widowed and her children orphaned to be a tragic event. Look at the heartache cause by the death of a husband and father. (Or for that matter, divorce and abandonment). It is one of the major reasons people turn against God. They blame him for the death (divroce, abandonment) of their parent or spouse.
Knowing that he was only go to live to age 33, for Jesus to have have married and sired children that would be "abandoned" by him would be a cruel and hurtful action. The abandonment of a family is strongly condemned through scripture. So it is something that Jesus would never have done.
As far as using descendents to spread the message - bad idea. Name me one institution that has managed to pass from father to son to grandson, etc without becoming totally corrupt. The father may be a good, intelligent, person who teaches truth and follows love and peace. That does not guarantee his sons, grandsons, etc will do the same. It would be a much better idea to hand the message from disciple to disciple. Have it preaches and taught by those who actual believe it and have had their lives transformed by it, rather then by someone who just happens to share a bloodline.
-- On the issue of the agnostics text: there are dozens of gnostics text that still exist. Do an Internet search and you will find them. They have been available from the entire 2000 years since they were written. And they have been preserved in Catholic, Orthodox, and other Christian libraries all that time. So the claim that they were all destroyed has no basis in fact. Nor that claim that they say Jesus was married. Not a single one of the existing gnostics text makes that claim. (I have read them).

If nothing else, Jesus knew that his purpose on earth was to die. Wouldn't it have been a bit cruel for him to put a wife and kids through losing him so young? I think that Jesus' priorities were very different. Like I said, his purpose on earth was to die, to sort out the problem of people being separated from God. There's the question of favouritism perhaps, although he did have friends so I don't know how different a wife would have been. But I don't think him having a wife and kids would have added anything much to the evidence of his existence. Unless you had a comprehensive, unquestionable genealogy to prove his ancestors were his ancestors it would be no more believable than what we have at the moment. There were plenty of people who knew him when he was on earth and several who wrote down what they knew of him. A wife and kids wouldn't add anything at all significant.

Well, Jesus did not come hereto start up a family. He came here to fulfill the Bible prophecy. You can have a personal relationship with Jesus even today, He is alive and well. Just ask Holy Spirit in your heart to guide you.
I do not know how it would be a benefit to anyone that He would have left His biological children fatherless and a His wife would be widow and dealing with the children and the aftermath of the crucifixion. I think it would have been very cruel even. And also He was on the go a lot, healing people and teaching.
It is the same for us, every call is not our call. We are here for a special purpose and we just need to find out what is it.We cannot feed all the poor but we can feed some of them. Jesus did not heel all the sick. So, just find out what is your assignment.
I think that God's plan is better than we would come up. : )

Actually we have the complete story and account to the life of Jesus given in great detail from birth until he started preaching and there was no wife involved. The gosple and even the jewish record agrees on this.
Have you ever notice that all the married men in the bible sinned. Can a person be married to a woman in these days and not sin. Things have not changed much have they.

With the reverence given Mary, and the insanity over Mary Magdalene, what would people have done with "genuine" decendants of Jesus?
Could you imagine a greater excuse for despotim?
Those 2000 year old stories are the best attested historical documents in ancient history. The best record we have of Julius Ceasar is 5 (count them, five) partial documents, and they disagree in some of the essentials. Virgil's works are attested by less than 20 copies, again partials and variations in essentials. We have an embarrassment of riches in documents for the New Testament with over 10,000 portions and with variations only in the minor details and misspellings, none of which touch a major doctrine of the Bible.

Nearly all that we think that we know about Jesus comes from the early catholic church.
They created a mythology around the idea of Jesus from many pagan traditions.
They borrowed a little from here and a little from there hoping to tone down Jesus' unmistakable unconditionally loving message.
Apparently Jesus' ideas about loving everyone all of the time without any exceptions was a bit too much for the 3rd century church leaders so they corrected the mistakes that Jesus had made and fixed his teachings to better reflect their own personal fears and insecurities.
You can still find the real Jesus in scripture but you need to look very carefully for his true message.
This is why so-called holy books like the bible often seem conflicted. Saying one thing in one place and nearly the opposite in another. These are always examples of the catholic church attempting to fix Jesus' message for him and correcting the mistakes that he made.
Love and blessings Don

They recently discovered the ossuary of the bones of James the brother of Jesus. Here's the link. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/04/0418_030418_jesusrelic.html
I think one reason Jesus didn't have a wife and kids, (despite what the ficticeous davinchi code says) was because he was our passover lamb, and the lamb had to be a yearling, unblemished and a male. Did you know that one generation = 33 years and that's how old Jesus was when he offered himself for our sins as our passover lamb. He had to be sinless and a virgin to be an acceptable sacrifice.
I wish I could offer you more "proof" that He exists. The proof we have is in our lives, how he speaks to us, works things in our lives for our good, heals us, loves us, changes us when we believe in Him. It's not something you can show over the internet. Ask Him into your heart and you'll see what I mean.

Put it this way, for a start there was not one compatible for Jesus. For a second Jesus come to do the will of his Father in Heaven and completed it very succesfully. Jesus died a horrible death for the sins of man kind. Jesus 2000 years ago was not interested in any women in a relationship way, as none were compatitable fore him. Jesus is very different man compared to other men and women, so it was impossible for any women 2000 years ago to be compatible with him. I hope that helps.

What you are essentially saying is that you think you have a better plan than God does. Which of course leads me to think that you don't believe the gospel of Jesus Christ. Most people seem to want God to meet them on their terms, to "prove" Himself with empirical evidence so that they may know before they believe. When you are ready and willing to meet God on His terms, He will reveal truth to you and you will never be the same. So the answer is no, imperfect, finite human beings cannot improve on God's plan for anything, especially His plan for salvation.

It wouldn't have been fair to them to leave them without a father or husband. Jesus knew what was required of Him (death), so to know that He was going to die soon and still choose to marry and have children, would be selfish. Jesus wasn't selfish. Also, how could He support them? His ministry took up all His time; if He had to be a carpenter full time to support a family, His ministry would take a backseat.
