Why does my cat 'paw' at the ground when he drinks?

He's not really pawing, he is kneeding it's a trait alot of cats do when they are happy, comfortable. Also this is what they do when they were feeding from the mother.

im not really sure...i could be what the other people said that the kneading is from when they were kittens. my cat what she does is she sticks her whole paw in her water dish. cats do weird things.

When nursing, this is how they stimulate the flow of milk. It is comforting to them.

It may have to do with instincts.
