He's not really pawing, he is kneeding it's a trait alot of cats do when they are happy, comfortable. Also this is what they do when they were feeding from the mother.

im not really sure...i could be what the other people said that the kneading is from when they were kittens. my cat what she does is she sticks her whole paw in her water dish. cats do weird things.
