I have multiple herniated discs in l5 l6 and this is what I do.

If it's real bad I stay in bed 1 or 2 days then I lay flat on my back with knees bent i slowly rotate my knees from side to side - then I get an appointment for the physical therapist and let her loosen me up some more - of course take Ibufen for the pain - then I go swimming - I've put off surgery for 25 years by doing these things

apparently the bowen technique helps, and reflexology, shiatsu, osteo, combined with these or apart from....I think that the best thing to do is to find the most suitable stretches that stretch ur IT band and piriformis muscle as I believe these two can be responsible for back pain and sciatica. Having had sciatic pain for 2 years on and off and have not had that for a while I think that is def what I do when it comes...v important to have excellent posture when stretching as if done incorrectly it can merely exacerbate the pain. Find yourself a qualfied instructor in postural alignment and pilates if it becomes a continual problem. Hope it gets better.....some resting is good also and v, important to relax to help the muscles to relax try some breathing exercises.

I would have to agree with the person which stated reflexology. Sciatica is painful and a normal massage may be too much to take. But it is a proven fact that Reflexology treatments can relieve the pain, and assist the body in healing itself.
The doctors would recommend rest and such, but if you know of reflexology, the bodys organs and nerves are mapped out on the foot. there is an area for the sciatic nerve. It is fairly reasonably priced, and highly effective. I suggest yu try it

I saw an answer from Ray homeopathic remedies are all worthless garbage. It is peddled by liars and frauds. What you're taking is water with NOTHING IN IT! This is better than their really giving you rhus,, though, since it is a deadly poison. Only one question to Ray Can you cure sciatica like diseases with water..???

You need to keep the pain under control by regularly taking anti inflammatories such as ibuprofen or voltarol (only after food though!)
Physiotherapy, which may include traction will help immensely, they will assess you and decide the best action.
Also, rest.

sometimes sciatica pain is caused from muscle contractions. i lay flat on my back and place a tennis ball under my back and work it down my back. this helps relaxes the pressure. i also do this to my gluteus maximus (butt area) as the sciatic nerve runs down the back, through the butt and down the leg. the pressure of the ball causes the muscle to relax thus relieving pressure on the nerve.

From looking at the other answers I assume it is muscle related. The best book on muscles, pain and referred pain that teaches you how to take care of yourself is The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
