We're not and we don't believe in any way, shape, or form the Catholic doctrines.
We don't believe that we should elevate the Pope to almost a God-like status, we don't need to go to Priests for forgiveness, we don't go and pray to Mary, we don't believe in the Catholic symbolisms.

Where do foreigners get the idea that when we say we're Christian that means we're Catholic?

Are these people as uninformed as they claim people of the West are? Oops, guess I just answer this question.

They are hedging their bets - because most Christians are catholic. Not necessarily Roman Catholic, but many Christian denominations are catholic in their beliefs, as in the Nicene creed "one holy, catholic and apostolic church". This includes protestants such as Lutherans, Anglicans (Episcopal in the US), Presbyterians. The list goes on.

My biggest gripe about non-catholics is the lack of understanding of how progressive the Roman Catholic church is, particularly with regard to evolution and the Big Bang Theory (both supported). I also admire their strong stand against abortion and euthanasia. I'm not keen about the contraception issues, though.

The Pope is not God-like, he is a man, like any other. All he does is represent the hierarchy within the church. As far as I know, he does not preach violence, only for the sanctity of life.

Catholics do not pray to Mary. Mary, along with other saints, is petitioned for help and guidance. The most common prayer for this is, of course, the "Hail Mary" - it goes in part "...Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death" So, in fact, you are asking Mary to pray for you. You are not praying at her or to her.

Sorry, I'll stop now.

I don't know about that, catholic churches are having a struggle in canada, except maybe arrogant Quebec, which thinks its better than the rest of Canada, and wants to be looked at as a "special" nation. I've noticed that imacatholic is at the top of the R/S page. I wonder how imacatholic is leader, I've never seen one answer from ? in any answer I've answered. But then, I don't answer questions that want catholic answerers only.

From the people I've met who are of a faith that believes in Jesus as a God, the Catholics are the most tolerable. They live and let live, they mostly seem like good people. The people who preach most often, and look down on others are the Lutherans and Baptists. They really make me angry.

"O ye of little faith"

Jesus Christ foresaw that there will be groups that will breakaway from the Church he founded and so he gave the Church the sole authority to interpret Sacred Scripture. The teaching authority of the Catholic Church comes directly from Christ and is, therefore, infallible.
Matthew 16,18-20: "And so I tell you Peter, you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my Church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven."
Matthew 28,20: "And teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age."
Timothy 3,15: "But if I delay, this letter will let you know how we should conduct ourselves in God's household, WHICH IS THE CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD, THE PILLAR AND FOUNDATION OF TRUTH."

I come from a land down under .........We're all foreigners here..
