It didn't look all that incompetent to me. The Americans saw a target, fired on a target, killed a target. Pretty competent.
The problem is with international communication. Those pilots had been told there were no friendlies in the area. Perhaps if the Brits kept their allies informed of their movements, they would not be killed by superior American firepower.

Don't worry pal... Brit on Brit friendly fire is more prevalent than American on British. The Candians manage to get picked off by both of us.
The allies need a better identifying system so they don't have to rely on split second decisions in unfamiliar territory. But the problem with the most radily available systems is they can be tracked by the enemy as well. A passive system that is picked up by transponders could work in theory, but again securing the signal from the enemy is paramount.

Taken from an article:
Six British soldiers died in the 2003 war from friendly-fire incidents, not all at the hands of the Americans. The British were guilty, too, of firing on each other, although not from the air. Two died when a Challenger 2 tank opened fire on another Challenger during a battle with Iraqi tanks.
It didn't mention that Brits had killed any US Troops but mate, we're far from being blameless.

Maybe the British need to remember that they were the ones who told the American pilots there were no friendlies in the area.
Maybe you guys should be spending a little more time fixing your reporting procedures and less time making excuses.

While we're on the subject of murdering troops on our own side, you might like to think about what your own generals did to your own troops, and those of your commonwealth nations, at places like Gillipoli and Dieppe. Their stupidity led to the death of thousands. Was anyone court marshaled and shot for those disasters?

They are not incompetent. It was an honest mistake. They did nothing on purpose, they were just doing their job to the best of their ability.
