You wont be paid off the bat, it takes months or even years before you can start tattooing for money. It is an art you are learning, not simply sticking pretty pictures on people with shrpie. We make this job look very easy but it takes a lot of hard work.
go round some of your local shops and see what they think of your art work. First make sure you take Art at school. but that is no guarantee. Make sure you draw your *** off. also see the sticky thread under apprenticeships in everytattoo.com forum. Do not try and go it alone. NEVER START OUT AS A SCRATCHER. IF they wont take you ask why, ask for advice how to get to that point.
OH and BS to what evryone will tell you about abusing apprentices. you might have to clean tubes and stuff but that can be a good learning experience. If u want it that bad ull go through it and if a studio respects u enough they wont do it. Ive been sprayed with soap once in the entire time ive worked here and it was during a soap fight. so dont listen to people about apprentice hazing cos its all for a laugh.

Art school is a good start. then you need to find someone to apprentice you. Don't expect to start putting gun to skin right away. Do expect all the crap jobs in the beginning. Cleaning the shop, running the counter, then when you finally start tattooing you will get stuck with all the initials Kanji and the little stuff no one else wants to do. That is until you prove yourself.
Good luck. This is a long road according to any of the artists that I know.

If you want to tattoo it should not be "just a job" ...
1st of all you should be practicing on yourself before you touch anyone else.
2nd you should make a portfolio of your artwork so that you may have it when you start looking for an apprenticship.
3rd you need to research your state laws on what they require to get a tattoo liscense use research options such as google or yahoo.
4th you must have an artistic ability meaning that you can actually create art in such a manner that it would look good on someones body.

What my son is doing to get started is Buying a starter tattoo kit online, not too expensive at (superiortattoo.com) since he is an artist he is using his own drawings on friends and relatives until he gets comfortable using the gun...hope this helps. Letty`

well, you won't be tattooing right away....you'll be a counter person, custodian...or other general shop person. In order to be an artist, you have to be an apprentice for quite some time.....oh yeah, and you clearly have to have talent as well
