Greed, greed and greed were the three primary reasons for the Crusades.
Oh, and to stop the Muslims from educating Europe.
Pope Innocent was scared that if things continued, all the great world of demolishing Ireland back to the Stone Age, of demolishing the whole Roman and Greek civilizations back to rubble and proclaiming the world "flat" and full of ignorant, superstitious and illiterate people.
It had been a huge effort from the days of Theodosius and Justianian to demolish over a thousand years of civilized progress. The Muslims threatened everything because they were the ones who held the last copies of a few ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian texts not burnt by Christians.
Even today, many ignorant and happily poorly educated Christians consider Muslims a threat. Good question!

The Crusades were even worse than that ! The fact that Christians were allowed to perform pilgrimage to the Christian holy places has nothing to do with it. The Crusades were undertaken by the fourth landless sons of the nobility in search land which in those days represented wealth. Whenever one perpetrates infamy and perfidy, the excuse is always to hide behind a divine cause. Incidentally, this is the justification of Islamists and Muslim terrorists to-day. The Crusades are long past gone and nothing can now be done about it over one thousand years later. More to the point, all of us, Muslims and non-Muslims must unite to fight religious terrorist which, to-day happens to be in the Western world.

Crusades is a world that is interpreted as "Holy War"... As a Christian I believe no war is holy....
... Our Lord who is the prince and father and master of peace has come as a humble child born in an insignificant little town....
... He spread his message of Love through Love ... he did not practoce violence and taught us to practice Love....
.... crusades were wrong for the Lord is able to keep his Church as he has always done....
... let us remember that other religions launched war against Christians for the same reasons Christians launched war on others... It is time to make peace with ourselves and all our human brothers!

The Crusades were really only about one thing. LAND.
To make it anything about a holy war is just as obsurd as what the leaders at the time were telling soilders to get them to fight.

yes religion was just another difference of the arabic and european civilization but there was in the first place a conflict between the civilization so it was attack or be attacked. They used religion to mass control and to get more people to fight for the wealth and well being of european civilization that was in open conflict with the arabic civilization.

thats the point... for hundreds of years that was the case... then for some reason the then ruler of Jerusalem banned Christians from the city and slaughter christians...
Granted he didnt reflect the mainstream view of christians.... but the Western Christians took great offence at that and fought for thier right...
it would be like if the USA took over Mecca... let Muslims worship there for a lil... and then forbid them from going there again... they would fight for the right to go there...
I think they were the result of a poor foreign policy from a Jerusalem king....

Yes. Without the crusades Christianity probably would not have survived the Muslim invasion.

The crusades, the spanosh inquisition, and the decomation of the American Indian and Asaskan eskimo were all totally unnecessary.
The Catholic Church has a trememdous amount of blood on it's hands.

Religion, itself, is unnecessary. Killing other people because they don't want to follow your personal superstition is even more unnecessary.
