I have to get an early morning flight from Gatwick South terminal and there is only one train I can get from my house. All being well, this will get me to the train station 20 mins before check-in closes. Is 20 mins enough time to get between the train station and South Terminal check-in (easyJet) whilst dragging a suitcase behind me?

Yes, 20 mins is fine as the station is only about 50yds from the terminal building. BUT - that'll get you to the check-in desk a couple of minutes before it closes. Are you sure that's what you want to do? A few minutes train delay... a queue at check-in... that's risking it. Easyjet won't let you check-in late - they're very strict on that.
I'd either:
a) Stay the night at a local airport
b) Take the bus
c) Take a taxi
d) Drive.

yes, it's not that far, about 5-10 minutes if I remember rightly. better hope the train's on time though!
